Moneydance offers budgeting software for both Mac and PC along with apps for Androids and mobile iOS devices. The platform is clean and well organized, automatically syncs to hundreds of financial institutions and helps you create a budget to stick to your financial goals. Because of all of its features within an easy-to-use program, we award Moneydance our Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award for money software.
The platform for this money-managing software is very simple, with a normal taskbar running along the top and your accounts, categories, budgets and report options running down the left side. The home page displays your accounts and balances, reminders, the calendar and your current monthly expenses. Also on the home page are the current exchange rates for foreign currency.
When syncing to your bank, credit union or other financial institution, you choose your institution from the list, enter your user ID and password. If your particular bank is not listed, you have to send a request to them to work with Moneydance. You also have the option to upload statements you download from your bank or to add individual transactions manually to the ledger.
When your transactions are in the ledger, you can edit them, assign categories, create reminders and add attachments to save receipt or other related documents. There is a large number of categories for transactions, and the software remembers when you assign certain payees categories and will automatically assign them when you next upload transactions from the same payee. You have the choice to use any of predetermined categories, edit them, delete the ones you don't use and add ones you need. These categories organize your spending reports and budget.
To create a budget, you simply enter the target amount for each category. When you view your budget, categories that are not close to their allotted budget appear in green, categories that are close to or at the budgeted amount are yellow and if you go over your budget for one category, it appears in red. The same color-coding applies to your total budget, which displays your total income against your total expenses.
To keep track of your transactions while you're away from a computer, you can download apps for Android and Apple devices. To use the mobile app, you must also have a Dropbox account where you first sync the software to the account and then access it on your mobile device. As with most mobile apps, they are trimmed down versions of the full software, but you can still perform basic functions, including viewing account balances and adding transactions.
This software has all of the basic reports we consider important for money software, but it also includes many specialized reports that other software do not offer. Normal reports include account balances, budget, expenses, income, net worth and income versus expenses. Additional reports include capital gains and investment reports. There is also a report to help you keep track of missing checks that have not yet cleared your bank when you reconcile your account. You can print reports, save them internally or outside of the program, or copy them to the clipboard to paste in another program.
If you choose to import your statements, this software is compatible with QIF and CSV files, which is fewer choices than many other services but are two of the most popular file formats. You can export transactions from your accounts into QIF, CSV or TXT files, which again is fewer choices than other services offer.
If you need any assistance with program, you can go to the company's website. There, a blog explains new features and updates for the software, and the knowledgebase and FAQs page are searchable by keyword to help you find your answers easily. If you cannot find your answer, you can use the live chat and submit a request ticket.
